SEO Tips 2010 - 2011 -2012

Keywords Placement

  • Page Title :
  • Include your keywords in your page title i.e. wrapped within the ‘title’ tag. Use your main keywords and try avoiding filler words like ‘and’ ‘or’, etc.
  • Keyword Positioning :
  • Make sure to mention your main keyword at the very top left and the very bottom right hand side of your webpage. A trick you could use is to include this in the copyright information at the bottom of the website.
  • H1, H2 Tags :
  • Have your main keyword wrapped atleast once within the ‘h1′ tag and your secondary keyword within the ‘h2′ tag, preferrable at the top.
  • Font Weight :
  • Bold, italicize or underline some of your keywords only one time each, maximum. Only do 1 per keyword or it will hurt you more than it helps.
  • Alt Attribute :
  • Include your keywords in the alt attribute of the image tag within your page, make sure its sensible and you don’t spam as alt is not just for search engines but even normal users will see that text as they hover their mouse over that image. An easy example is your keyword. This is a good way to maintain keyword density without stuffing your content with keywords.
  • Image names as Keywords :
  • Naming the title of an image on your page as a keyword is another good idea, like ‘my-keyword’-image.jpg
  • Avoiding Image Title Spamming :
  • Pick some other images or graphics from your page and name them and add alt text after your other keywords, adding additional words like ‘image’ or ‘picture’ will help google not see that as spam. e.g. alt=”my-2nd-keyword-image”
  • URLs :
  • As far as URLs are concerned, have your keywords within them when possible and seperate them with hyphens (’-') instead of ‘underscores’ or other characters. e.g. http://www.xyzx.com/this-is-my-keyword. ONLY have keywords in URLs if it is very much relevant. A mistake here can keep potential organic visitors from coming to your site just at the look of a crappy URL from Goole’s SERP.

Avoid Getting Banned By a Search Engine

    On-Page Techniques to avoid :
  • Hidden Text :
  • DO NOT use hidden text within your webpage. i.e. if your background is white, don’t add your keywords in white text which will not be visible to readers but will be visible to search engines. It does you no good and can get you permanently banned from a Search Engine’s database.
  • Alt Image Spamming :
  • Avoid stuffing the alternate text(alt) of your image with keywords, one or two keywords is fine, you add more and its a bright red flag which could get you banned.
  • Meta Tag Stuffing :
  • , avoid this. Search Engines don’t use meta tags to rank you. This will do you no good at all, its really ridiculous that some webmasters use this stupid false technique.
  • Title tag stuffing :
  • . This will never do you any good ever, having a keyword once in the title is okay but not so many times. The visitors you get will just see the title before the page leaves and may very well leave. Search engines again will flag you for spamming.
  • Doorway Pages
  • Avoid Doorway Pages. They are for the sole purpose of misleading search engine visitors by spamdexing the search engines, doing so can get you banned by Search Engines.
  • Cloaking
  • Cloaking includes providing different content to search engines bots and real visitors. This is done to optimize a page for a particular keyword which is totally unrelated to the actual content. The penalty for cloaking is a sure ban by a search engine.
    Off-page Techniques to avoid :
  • Bad Neighborhoods :
  • Avoid linking to any sites that have been banned by Google, link farms and so on. These sites may have been good and quality sites when u linked them to your site but if they have been banned by google, its a major set-down for you if you have their links on your site. It’ll impact your position on the search results and can affect you severely including you getting banned yourself.
  • Link Farms and Backlink Spamming :
  • Submitting your website to link farms and just spamming your links on forums and such other places should be avoided. Your competitors may do it with the idea of getting you banned, but don’t worry, you won’t get banned for this but i strongly suggest you avoid it as it can screw up the reputation of your site. Having a quality backlink is far more better than having 100 useless backlinks.

Gaining Backlinks

  • The value of a backlink(links to your site on other sites) on other sites depends on the following factors :
  • a) Pagerank of the webpage your link is on – Higher the better. b) Page Title of the webpage your link is on – Better if it includes your keywords c) The ‘theme’/'niche’ of the website your link is on – Should be related to your’s d) Anchor text used in the link linking to you – Should be your keyword e) The number and type of links linking to that website – Higher the better f) The number of links(outbound and inbound) on the webpage your link is on – lower the better g) Whether or not the website is considered by Google as an Authority website. h) The I.p. address of the website linking to you
  • Having backlinks from many different I.p. addresses is recommended rather than having many backlinks from one i.p. address.
  • Use your own website to get backlinks, i.e. link keywords from your site to internal pages within the same site.
  • Make use of different anchor text while linkbuilding frequently. Using the same anchor text to promote a particular link can make the search engine algorithm suspicious and may penalize you for backlink spamming.

Content

  • Avoid duplicate content, it is not indexed by Google and lowers your reputation on Google.
  • Make sure your frequency of adding unique original content to your site is maintained. The more frequently you add content, more the attention you get from Search Engines Bots.
  • Content should be legitimate. Highlighting porn, drugs, etc. and linking to such sites within your content can make things worse in a search engine point of view.
  • Keyword rich content always helps a great deal in SEO, it even makes things easier if you are doing off-page Seo for that particular keyword. Just make sure you don’t overdo it.
